SKIN ATTENTION

By John Sarbacker, MD & Kay Carlson, E. T.

Some patients can use anything and “get away with it”. Others have to search and search for just the right combination of products for satisfactory use.

New Patients benefit from the follow-up visits to the Enterstomal Therapist because careful consideration is given to the use of various products used around the stoma area.

If you are experimenting on your own, consider the following information before using a different product.

Patch testing is recommended before proceeding to use the new product. The skin on the inner surface of the arm or leg, or the opposite of the abdominal area from the stoma are good areas to use for a simple test.

For example, cut a piece of the washer, tape, disc, etc., and affix it to a chosen area. Secure with a strip of micropore tape, and leave on the area for 48 hours.

Any burning sensation or itching during the testing time could signify a sensitivity to the material being used: and therefore, the “patch’ should be removed immediately and the area washed and dried well.

Otherwise after 48 hours, remove the “patch” and, if there is no redness or irritation, it is safe to assume that the product can be used. With some persons, a “delayed reaction” may not occur until a few days later. For more extensive testing then this, please contact a dermatologist.

PRODUCT NEWS:  CAVILON BARRIER FILM -  NEXCARE LIQUID BANDAGE SPRAY

I have just recently found out from the 3M Company, that one of my favorite products for treating peristomal skin irritation can now be found at Wal-Mart. I have always recommended 3M No Sting (Cavilon) Spray protective film for minor skin irritation or to use over stoma powder or anti-fungal powder. Wal-Mart now carries the same product for a fraction of the price you will pay at another store. It goes by the name “3M Nexcare No Sting Liquid Bandage Spray”. It is found by the Band Aids and other first aid products. It does not hurt if some of this gets on the stoma when applying. You will be able to gently remove this white-grey coating from the stoma. As its name says, this product does not sting when applied to open, irritated skin. Just be sure this protective film is dry before you apply your ostomy wafer barrier.

Ed’s Note: Please check with your own ostomy Nurse or Doctor before trying this new product, just in case...
