1. ASSISTANCE TO THE PERSON WITH AN OSTOMY A. The Chapter will send a member to visit the ostomy patient in the hospital pre-operatively and/or post operatively at the request of the physician. B. A member will be available to the patient for friendly visiting and reassurance after hospitalization, by visit, or via Phone. 2. EDCUATION AND INFORMATION A. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every other month, February, April, June, August, October, and December, at 7:00 P.M., at the following location: 4700 Kalamazoo Ave. S. E. Grand Rapids MI 49518 B. An educational Newsletter is published monthly and contains dates of meetings and information helpful to all ostomates, their families, and friends. C. Qualified speakers conduct classes on ostomy care for student nurses, staff nurses, and doctors, on request. D. Ostomy Rap Sessions are held as a meeting at least 2 or 3 times a year, for all of your appliance questions.
ENTEROSTOMAL THERAPY An Enterostomal Therapist is a nurse who has a special interest in people with ostomies. She has graduated from one of several schools of Enterostomal Therapy and is a member of and certified by, the Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses Assoc. The W. O C. N. is recognized as the organization which provides, regulates, and maintains competency in ostomy rehabilitation. The Enterostomal Therapist’s (E. T.) services begin with a written referral from the physician. Those services are: - Pre-surgical orientation to surgical procedure, expected procedure, expected hospital experience, and rehabilitated life as an ostomate. - Pre-surgical marking of stoma sight when necessary - Arranging for trained ostomy visitor. - Immediate post-op rehab self-care instructions and support. - Life long follow-up support, instructions and up-date. - Directing guiding and monitoring the nursing care of the ostomate while hospitalized. - All services include family and/or significant others as patient approves or necessity dictates. - The E. T. assists the physician as a member of the Health Care Team to provide the ostomate with the necessary tools and back ground for total rehabilitation.
